Decorating Your Home for Christmas Like an Adult

Christmas brings out the kid in all of us. No matter your age, you’re undoubtedly filled with memories of waiting for Santa and tearing open presents, of the great family meals and fun beach days you had as a child. But while Christmas is always a lot of fun for the kids (and a lot of work for the adults!) you shouldn’t let that impact your design style when decorating your home for the holiday.

When decorating your home for Christmas, think back to your favourite Christmas adventures on the beach.

The fact is, if you indulge your inner child too much at Christmas time, you can wind up with a garish, cluttered house that feels childish, not celebratory. Christmas is a time to loosen up and have some fun, sure, but you should always have a goal of being classy and mature in your design decisions. Here’s a quick guide to avoiding the worst mistakes when decorating your home for Christmas.

Avoid Clutter

Avoid clutter when decorating your home for Christmas.

The more stuff you put out and about, the less festive your home will feel and the more crowded and suffocating. If guests can barely move without knocking over another piece of Christmas cheer, they’re going to feel very constrained. Instead of putting things out on every surface and free bit of floor, consider using canvas prints and other wall art to bring festive images without taking up space. And when it comes to the more three-dimensional items you consider using, follow a simple rule: Only one item per surface.

Managing Colour

There's a simple colour pattern to follow when decorating your home for Christmas.

Christmas has a distinct colour palette: Red, green, and white. However that doesn’t mean everything in your home should be red, green, or white. When decorating for Christmas, follow these tips:

  • Consider your home’s actual design palette, and find shades of green and red that fit into it naturally.
  • Pastels and non-traditional shades of red and green can suggest Christmas without screaming it from every wall.
  • When in doubt, white is perfectly Christmassy without being overbearing.

Choosing Wall Art

Think outside the box when choosing wall art and decorating your home for Christmas.

Whether canvas prints are replacing your clutter or simply a way of bring some Christmas into each room, don’t be too literal. Santa, trees, and presents evoke the spirit of the season, of course, but a little subtlety goes a long way.

Consider as an alternative classic scenes from Christmas-themed films. By choosing images that evoke the season without any of the traditional iconography when decorating your home for Christmas, in fact, you instantly make your holiday design more subtle and effective.

Of course, if you want a home filled with the classic images and colours of the season, more power to you – but a little adult restraint goes a long way. Whatever your strategy, when you’ve selected your images click here and we’ll turn them into awesome Christmas prints to cheer up every room in the house.
