Usually canvas prints get used to either display family photos or other personal images or to create an art gallery of contemporary art-style images that complement or even challenge the overall design of the room. This sort of one-image one-canvas print approach is clean, simple, and effective – but also just the tip of the iceberg.

The most important thing to remember about using canvas art to decorate is that it’s art – meaning that there are very few limitations beyond your imagination. Instead of thinking in terms of one image per canvas print, get creative and see what you can do. Here are a few ideas to take you one step deeper into the world of canvas art for interior design.

Advanced Canvas Art Ideas: Postcard Mosaic

Sometimes a single image can be a bit overwhelming on a large canvas print. Your children or your pet dog may be adorable, but when they’re massive and staring at your guests from the wall it can be a bit distracting.

Instead of always going with a single monolithic image, why not create a canvas print from dozens of photos? Take pictures of your family as an easy example: Select an even number of the best photos – include all the kids, animals, and neighbours as you see fit, from all kinds of photos. Then, using your computer’s photo software, size them all to about postcard size (about 3.5 x 5 inches), cropping as needed to make the composition work.

Then, create a new picture as large as the canvas print you’d like to hang and paste all of your postcard-sized photos into it. Make sure you create it at a large enough quality setting so it will look good when printed. The end result will be quite amazing!

Advanced Canvas Art Ideas: Sliding Puzzle

Another great technique to jazz up your canvas art is a “sliding puzzle” effect. Take a prized photo and in your editing software slice it into equal-sized boxes using the crop function. Save each box as an individual file. Then re-assemble the boxes into a single photo again – but re-arrange them just like they were a sliding box puzzle, complete with on blank space.

You may need to resize everything to make it large enough for the right impact. You might even create a series of these using the same photo – starting with the images all mixed up and progressing to a “solved” puzzle that shows the complete image, but with the lines separating the puzzle pieces still showing for effect!

Advanced Canvas Art Ideas: The 3D Effect

This one’s a lot of fun: Take a still-life photo of some favourite objects – bric-a-brac from a vacation, a gift from a loved one, a collection you’ve been curating your whole life. Make a nicely composed photo with the objects front and centre, with a nice background.

Now, have the photo turned into a grand canvas print, and hang it on the wall and then arrange the objects in front of the print exactly as they appear. The 3D effect is quite striking, and instantly becomes a conversation piece for both the print and the objects themselves. The sense of things coming to life from the picture also brings an energy to the room that’s hard to describe, or ignore.

The point is, there’s a world of possibilities once you start using canvas art to decorate. There’s no reason everything has to be flat and simple – spice things up, and then click here and we’ll get you started.

The most important thing to remember about using canvas art to decorate is that it’s art – meaning that there are very few limitations beyond your imagination.
